NOW, none of us at InsureAnts HQ would profess to be any great whizzes at DIY, but that still doesn’t stop GrAnt.
Our files are bulging these days with more and more happy customers who have managed to save bucket loads of money on their car insurance.
But instead of getting in a handyman to knock up a couple of shelves, GrAnt decided he could save us money by doing it himself.
So not only do we have about a dozen holes drilled in the wall after GrAnt got his measurements “a bit off”, we now also have a shelf that Eddie the Eagle (ask your parents, kids) could jump off the end of.
Still, if you have a decent idea of what you’re at, you can save money by giving your car the once over every so often. Let’s face it, petrol isn’t getting any cheaper either, so if you can prevent the need to bring your motor into the garage every time you hear “a funny noise” (I’m looking at you Ant Toinette), you could stop maintenance costs stacking up.
This means that not only will your car be running more efficiently, you’ll have more chance of passing the MOT when it rolls around every year.
Keep an eye on the engine and especially look out for any problems which are related to oil. Changing the oil every six months can eradicate problems and can also help you get more out of your engine, making it much more fuel efficient so the petrol or diesel you pump in will last longer.
Think like the MOT tester
Put yourself in the position of the MOT tester (no Ant Tony, you don’t need the blue overalls) each time you look at your car. Things like a spark plugs or exhaust which are faulty will fail the MOT. If you spot it and can even fix it yourself, you’ll save money and time as there’ll be no need to reschedule the test.
Okay men, we know we’re not the best at reading instruction manuals, but if you study your car manual, you’ll know what to do if you need to replace something spark plugs or fix some other minor problem. You’ll be able to stride confidently into the car parts shop and know exactly what to ask for.
Even if you’re not much of a grease monkey, having a bit of a root around under the bonnet can unearth some problems which could end up costing you a fortune down the line.
If you want to take it a step further, check out videos online or get your hands on some pretty cheap car maintenance books.
Cars aren’t as much of a mystery as you’d think and taking a bit of time can save you a lot of money. A bit like getting a car insurance quote at InsureAnts.co.uk.
